How to fix stripped threads on non-removable derailleur hangers
If your threads are stripped out on your derailleur hanger you don't have to throw your swing arm away. Here is a simple way to fix the threads.
1. Buy a HeliCoil® thread repair kit part number 5404-10 . This can be purchased at a industrial supply store like MSC Industrial Supply Co www.mscdirect.com 1-800-645-7270 use order number 00068445 for the kit. The standard threads for a derailleur is M10x1.
2. Remove derailleur from the bike and let hang, cover it with a rag to keep chips from getting into it.
3. Wear safety glasses. Use the the drill provided in the kit to drill the bad threads out, make sure the drill is perpendicular to the derailleur hanger. If the hole is drilled crooked the derailleur could get misaligned.
4. Use the Heli-Coil tap supplied with the kit. Check size on shank to make certain proper size is used.
5. Installing the Heli-Coil insert. Retract mandrel and place insert in tool (tang end towards front of tool).
6. Select a insert that is closest to the thickness of your derailleur hanger, if none are short enough they can be cut off later. Rotate mandrel through insert until tang is fully engaged in driving contour. Continue to rotate mandrel until insert is engaged in 1 or 2 threads in the body.
7. Place the tool squarely against the tapped hole and rotate mandrel, holding the body with one hand until the insert is 3/4 the way in the hole. Do not hold body tightly against the derailleur hanger-allow tool to float. Check to see if the length of the insert is going to be too long, you want to make sure the insert will not stick out the other end when it is fully installed in the hanger. The insert needs to be flush on both ends, with the insert 3/4 of the way in, estimate how much needs to be cut off if any. The easiest way to cut off the excess insert is use a Dremel tool with a abrasive cutoff wheel installed, wear safety glasses. Debur the the end that was cut off and install the insert 1/4 to 1/2 turn below top surface.
8. Tang Removal. The tang may be broken off cleanly at the notch in the bottom coil with the supplied T.B.O. rod. Place the rod into the assembled insert until it rests on the tang. Holding the tool squarely, strike it sharply with a hammer.
9. Install the derailleur. Make sure the derailleur lines up, test the shifting. Go ride and catch big air!
